The rise of electric cars

The rise of electric cars

The automobile sector is continuously being transformed. The number of companies which rely on sustainability and show their commitment to the environment is increasing every day. They do it through the use of electrical means of transport, which contaminate less than traditional ones.

The most prominent case is that of car2go, a subsidiary of German Daimler AG, which in 2008 launched an electric car rental service, charged per minutes of use, together with Smart, throughout European cities and in North America. The booking is made via a smartphone once the user has been registered in its database. After signing up, anyone can use the service in all the cities in the world where it is installed.

In Spain, the only city with this rental service is the capital. In Madrid, there are already more than 53.000 registered users and car2go has a fleet of about 500 cars throughout the 53 square kilometers where it operates.

On the other hand, in Barcelona there is a rental service of electric motorcycles called Cooltra. Its operation is the same: when the user gets registered in the database via a smartphone, s/he is ready to use the service, which is also charged according to the number of minutes it is used. After the success of this service, the company will start to operate in Madrid too, from October onwards, with a fleet of 150 motorcycles.

These new means of transport are mobilizing the society’s awareness. Electric cars, motorcycles and electric bicycles can be found more and more often in some Spanish cities. The composition of the pieces of these means of transport allows achieving lighter weight through the use of materials such as carbon fiber.

Carbures is one of the main companies which develop parts in composites for cars, trains and aircrafts, thus helping to produce lighter and more efficient vehicles which contaminate less. Our aim is to contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable planet.
