The new facilities of CARBURES in El Burgo de Osma (Soria-Spain) allow mass production of carbon fiber structures for the automotive industry thanks to the know-how developed, the result of the values of innovation and continuous improvement that permeate the company . The newspaper El Mundo has published the positive externalities that CARBURES will produce with its carbon fiber production activity.
CARBURES will produce the first mass-produced of carbon fiber structures for automotive sector
- The firm is close to get to agreement with one of the larger companies of the sector
- The contract will double the production capacity in the plant located in El Burgo de Osma (Spain)
- The project starts a revolution because it changes metal for composites
Currently, manufacturers of car units produce only between forty thousand and fifty thousand parts in small series. The facilities of El Burgo de Osma (Spain) have the capacity to produce 500,000 units per year, so that if the contract of one million pieces is finally got CARBURES must double its production capacity. At the moment is not going to change the initial approach that is being completed.
Once the process is started, Juarez claimed 'growth could be fast both involving investors and recruitment, as in other aspects related with manufacturing. "
"Any increase in production capacity entails greater manufacturing employment "he said.
The member of the board of director in CARBURES remarked that "it is a new project so far at the moment it has not been conducted mass-production of carbon fiber for the automotive industry." Juárez emphasized that innovation is not yet a reality although it does seem a fact that comes immediately motivated by the new technology and machinery that CARBURES has developed, and which is going to be used in the plant in El Burgo de Osma.
As for where the units manufactured in El Burgo de Osma will be targeted Juarez explained that "the automotive market is a very global market and finally the last client are manufacturers of cars, can not talk now customers and specific brands, in order to not hinder the sales process itself. "However, the company expects that the growth was fast and this new innovation was welcomed by the market.
Fiber era
From the company insisted in pointing out that mass production of carbon fiber elements for the automotive industry will be a revolutionary technological advancement. "Until now production volume was limited , this is a jump forward," said Juarez. "It is clear that this
jump is not going to stop there, this step will convert the plant into a reference of the activity, and will output the following increase ', insisted the financial member of the board of directors of CARBURES.
"This is a breakthrough, we can say that the era of metals is giving way to the era of carbon fiber" Juarez said adding "I don´t know if in ten years, five or two, but inevitably the composites will reach all vehicles."
Continuous growth
CARBURES was born as a spin off of the University of Cadiz and in 12 years it has been established in the United States and China, it quoutes in the stock market and has numerous challenges ahead. In the past two years its business figures are outstanding. In 2011 got a turnover of 3.3 million while for this year expected to be completed with 60 million euros. The goal is to reach 195 million in 2014.
Since it started quoting at the Alternative Stock Market, a year and a half ago, it has risen its value a 600%. With its quoting in the stock market and the capital increases made the company has attracted 13.5 million, according to sources from the company.
Apart from in El Burgo de Osma the company has plants in Spain (Puerto de Santa Maria and Jerez de la Frontera), in the U.S. (Greenville and Seattle) and in China where it is finishing the construction with a local partner. For the plant in El Burgo de Osma CARBURES has planned an investment of 12 million euros. 2.2 million come from a repayable incentive of Spanish Ministery of Industry.
Less weight, more security.
The introduction of composites in the design and construction of the cars will be a significant advance in the automotive industry. The carbon fiber will allow to reduce the weight of vehicles without a loosing of power. This material provides a reduction in mass of 4.5 times with respect to steel and 2 times with respect to aluminum. The result of the research in this field, such as this carried out by CARBURES, will enable weight reduction in vehicles and thus in their consumption and CO2 emission to the atmosphere.
Meanwhile electric cars will be able to go farther without recharging.
Besides the advantages in weight and simplification of the process, when shaping large carbon fiber pieces in one piece, we are giving greater rigidity: eliminating vibrations and thereby we increase safety. In this aspect, the energy absorption of the carbon fiber is 5 times higher per kilogram than steel, so that by combining advanced composites with steel parts we can increase the safety of our vehicles, according explanations from CARBURES. This new technology will not suppose the full substitution of metals by the composites, but it is a given that it will be tried to get a mix between the two that will produce vehicles "greener, safer and more competitive" according CARBURES.
The details of CARBURES project
The project: Mass-production of carbon fiber parts for automotive industry by using machinery worldwide patented.
The investment: 12 million euros. The factory is installed on a ship assigned by the city council of Soria.
Employment: The intention is to start with between 20 and 25 jobs. It is being held the recruitment process according the company. The number of jobs will increase depending on production needs. At full capacity it will employ about 65 people.
Schedule: The start of production is planned for early 2014
CARBURES will produce 1 million parts for automotive giant
The company will expand the production capacity in El Burgo de Osma to meet the order.
CARBURES is about to close a deal with automotive giant to supply one million pieces per year of carbon fiber to be manufactured in the facilities in El Burgo de Osma, as was confirmed by the financial member of the board of directors Juan Juarez. The aim is that production can begin early next year. CARBURES will pioneer these long mass-production of carbon fiber pieces for the automotive industry.
